3 Simple Trading Strategies to Find High-Probability Forex Trade Setups

Stop making trading more complicated than it needs to be! You don’t need a chart packed with dozens of indicators or hours of endless analysis to identify potential trading opportunities. Sometimes, the key to a better trading process is knowing exactly what to look for—and having a clear plan for when to enter and where to place your stop loss.

In this guide, we’re breaking down three straightforward trading strategies designed to help you recognize potential market opportunities with greater clarity. We’ll start with a High-Probability Trend Reversal Strategy, then move on to a High-Probability Trend Correction Strategy and a Multi-Timeframe Trend Correction Strategy.

Let’s start with the first strategy, where two popular technical indicators work together to help identify potential changes in market direction.

Strategy #1: High-Probability Trend Reversal Strategy

The concept behind this strategy is simple: use the Stochastic Oscillator and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) together to identify potential shifts in market momentum.

Instead of relying on a single indicator to make a trading decision, you’ll look for both indicators to cross the critical 50 level in the same direction. You’ll also use a Moving Average as a reference for placing your stop loss.

The goal is to recognize a potential trend reversal before committing to a trade.

SELL Entry: Identifying a Potential Bearish Reversal

Start by looking for a market that has been moving upward. Your objective is to identify signs that bullish momentum may be weakening and bearish momentum could be taking over.

Watch the Stochastic Oscillator and RSI closely. When both indicators cross below the 50 level from above, you’re looking at a potential shift in momentum from bullish to bearish.

Here’s how to approach the setup:

  1. Wait for confirmation from both indicators. The Stochastic Oscillator and RSI should cross below the 50 level from above, moving in the same direction.
  2. Prepare your SELL entry. Once both indicators have crossed below 50, the strategy calls for entering a short position at the opening of the next candle.
  3. Place your stop loss. Position your stop loss above the Moving Average, following the rules of this strategy.

And there it is! You’ve identified a potential bearish reversal using a straightforward combination of momentum indicators and a Moving Average.

Look at the chart example. Before the signal appeared, the market was moving in a bullish direction. Then, the Stochastic Oscillator and RSI crossed below the 50 level together, signaling that momentum may be shifting toward the downside.

Following the entry rules, a SELL position is opened at the next candle’s opening, with the stop loss placed above the Moving Average. In the example, the price subsequently moves downward, and the market transitions from a bullish phase into a bearish one.

That’s the core idea: wait for both indicators to confirm the momentum shift, follow your entry rules, and define your risk before taking the trade.

Keep in mind that this signal identifies a potential reversal, not a guaranteed one. Markets can produce false signals, so proper risk management remains essential.

BUY Entry: Identifying a Potential Bullish Reversal

Now let’s flip the setup around.

This time, imagine the market has been moving downward. Instead of looking for a bearish reversal, you’re searching for evidence that selling pressure may be fading and bullish momentum could be developing.

What should you watch for?

Look at the Stochastic Oscillator and RSI. When both indicators cross above the 50 level from below, they signal a potential shift in momentum from bearish to bullish.

The key is that both indicators move upward through the 50 level in the same direction. When their movements align, the setup provides a clearer signal to evaluate than relying on either indicator independently.

Here’s how to execute the BUY setup:

  1. Wait for both indicators to cross above 50. The Stochastic Oscillator and RSI must move upward through the level from below.
  2. Enter the trade. According to this strategy, open a BUY position at the beginning of the next candle after the signal appears.
  3. Set your stop loss. Place your stop loss below the Moving Average to define your risk if the market moves against your position.

Now look at the chart example.

The market was previously bearish, but the Stochastic Oscillator and RSI began moving upward together. Both indicators crossed above the 50 level, suggesting that bullish momentum might be taking control.

After the signal appeared, the BUY entry was taken at the opening of the following candle, with the stop loss positioned below the Moving Average.

As the example demonstrates, the price subsequently moved higher, and the market shifted from bearish conditions toward a bullish trend.

This is the BUY setup in action: instead of guessing where the market might reverse, you wait for the indicators to provide a signal that aligns with your trading rules.

Of course, not every bullish signal will lead to a sustained uptrend. A market can reverse temporarily, move sideways, or continue falling despite the indicators crossing above 50. That’s why you should evaluate the broader price action and manage your risk carefully.

Why Use the Stochastic Oscillator, RSI, and Moving Average Together?

Each indicator serves a different purpose in this trading strategy.

  • Stochastic Oscillator: Helps assess momentum by comparing the closing price with its recent price range.
  • Relative Strength Index (RSI): Measures the strength of recent price movements and helps traders evaluate momentum.
  • Moving Average: Provides a reference for the stop-loss placement specified by this strategy.

The 50 level is especially important here because it acts as the central reference point for the indicator signals. A downward crossing can indicate weakening bullish momentum, while an upward crossing can indicate strengthening bullish momentum.

When both indicators cross the level in the same direction, the strategy uses that alignment as a potential trend-reversal signal.

However, using two indicators does not guarantee a more accurate trade. The Stochastic Oscillator and RSI both respond to price movements, so their signals can overlap. You should test the complete strategy on historical data and in a demo account before risking real money.

Want to Learn the Other Two Trading Strategies?

The High-Probability Trend Reversal Strategy is just the beginning. There are two more approaches to explore if you want to develop a more structured method for analyzing market movements.

Strategy #2: High-Probability Trend Correction Strategy

This strategy focuses on identifying potential trading opportunities when the market temporarily moves against its dominant trend before potentially continuing in the original direction.

Strategy #3: Multi-Timeframe High-Probability Trend Correction Strategy

This approach takes trend-correction analysis a step further by examining multiple timeframes. The objective is to evaluate the broader market direction alongside potential entry opportunities on a lower timeframe.

Remember, successful trading isn’t about finding a strategy that never loses. It’s about understanding your setup, following consistent rules, controlling your risk, and evaluating your results over time.

Start by learning one strategy, practice it consistently, and make sure you understand its limitations before moving on to the next.

Break of Structure (BoS) vs. Change of Character (CHoCH): How to Read Market Structure Like a Pro

  • Identify Market Direction: BoS helps confirm whether the current trend is likely to continue, while CHoCH signals a potential shift in market direction.
  • Anticipate Trading Opportunities: Both concepts help traders identify potential entry points by understanding how price behaves around key swing highs and swing lows.
  • Understand Market Momentum: They reveal changes in buying and selling pressure, helping traders assess whether bullish or bearish momentum is strengthening or weakening.
  • Improve Trade Timing: By combining market structure with liquidity, Fair Value Gaps (FVGs), and Order Blocks (OBs), traders can identify higher-quality trading setups.
  • Build a Clear Trading Bias: BoS and CHoCH provide a structured way to analyze price action instead of relying on guesswork or random entries.

In simple terms: BoS helps you recognize potential trend continuation, while CHoCH helps you spot early signs of a possible trend reversal. Together, they provide a foundation for understanding market structure and making more informed trading decisions.
