How to Trade the SLEC and SHEC Candlestick Patterns: A Full Strategy Breakdown

If you’ve been searching for a candlestick strategy that’s straightforward, repeatable, and actually works in real market conditions — you’re in the right place. In this breakdown, I’m going to walk you through a complete, step-by-step analysis using two powerful candlestick patterns: the Swing Low Engulfing Candle (SLEC) and the Swing High Engulfing Candle (SHEC).

No fluff. No theory overload. Just a clean, practical look at how these patterns work together with key support and resistance levels — and how to use them to enter high-probability trades with a tight stop loss.

Let’s get into it.

Trading the SLEC — Swing Low Engulfing Candle

Step 1: Identify the Major Support Level

Every solid trade starts with context. Before you even think about an entry, your first job is to identify a major support level on the chart.

This isn’t just any random price floor — we’re talking about a key level where price has historically respected and bounced. A level that’s obvious. A level that stands out even when you zoom out to the higher timeframe.

Once you’ve marked that level, your job is simple: wait. Don’t force anything. Don’t jump the gun.

You’re watching to see whether the market is going to form an SLEC pattern at or near that support zone. If it does — great, you have a high-probability buy signal. If it doesn’t — that’s fine too. You move on and look for the setup somewhere else. There will always be another chart, another opportunity.

The golden rule: never force a trade where the pattern doesn’t exist.

Step 2: Confirm With an Oscillator

Price action alone is powerful, but adding an oscillator to your analysis gives you an extra layer of confirmation — and that confirmation can be the difference between a good trade and a great one.

Here’s what you’re looking for:

When price reaches your major support level, pull up your preferred oscillator. It could be the RSI (Relative Strength Index), the CCI (Commodity Channel Index), or the Stochastic Oscillator — whichever you’re most comfortable with.

You want to see one of two things:

  • Oversold conditions — the oscillator has dropped into the oversold zone, signaling that selling momentum is exhausted and buyers are likely to step in.
  • Oscillator Divergence — price is making a lower low, but your oscillator is making a higher low. This divergence is a strong signal that bearish momentum is weakening significantly.

Either condition works. Both together? Even better.

Step 3: Wait for the SLEC to Form — Then Execute

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for.

After confirming your major support level and seeing your oscillator signal weakness in the downtrend, you watch for the Swing Low Engulfing Candle to form.

In this example, the Stochastic Oscillator was clearly sitting in oversold territory — a textbook sign of significant downside momentum loss. And right on cue, the SLEC appeared at the support zone.

Here’s how to execute it cleanly:

  • ✅ Entry: Place your BUY order at the open of the very next candle after the SLEC forms. Don’t wait. Don’t second-guess. The pattern has spoken.
  • ✅ Stop Loss: Place your stop loss just below the nearest swing low — the lowest wick of the SLEC candle itself. Keep it tight.
  • ✅ Target: Let price run toward the next area of resistance or structure. The reward-to-risk ratio on a setup like this is often surprisingly generous.

And just like that — price surged upward, delivering a substantial gain while the stop loss risk remained minimal. That’s the beauty of trading with a defined, rules-based pattern.

Part 2: Trading the SHEC — Swing High Engulfing Candle

Now let’s flip the script and look at the bearish side of this strategy.

Step 1: Identify the Key Resistance Level

Just like the SLEC setup begins with finding major support, the SHEC setup begins with identifying a key resistance level.

In this example, when you look to the left of where the SHEC pattern formed, the answer becomes crystal clear — price was sitting right at a key resistance zone. A level where sellers had pushed price down before and were likely to do it again.

This is not a coincidence. The best SHEC setups almost always form at areas where price has a clear historical reason to reverse.

Step 2: Confirm Overbought Conditions or Oscillator Divergence

With your key resistance level identified, the next step is to check your oscillator — in this case, the Stochastic Oscillator.

And when you look at the Stochastic window here, the signal is unmistakably clear:

  • Price had pushed into overbought territory — buying momentum was stretched and running on fumes.
  • Even more telling: oscillator divergence was forming. Price was making a higher high, but the Stochastic was making a lower high. That’s a classic sign of significant bullish momentum losing steam — a warning that a reversal could be right around the corner.

When you see this combination — key resistance + overbought conditions + divergence — your eyes should immediately shift to the candlestick action.

Step 3: Wait for the SHEC to Form — Then Execute

Right after all those conditions aligned, the Swing High Engulfing Candle formed exactly where it needed to.

Here’s the clean execution:

  • ✅ Entry: Place your SELL order at the open of the next candle after the SHEC confirms. No hesitation — the setup is fully formed.
  • ✅ Stop Loss: Place your stop loss just above the nearest swing high — the top wick of the SHEC candle. Tight, logical, and clearly defined.
  • ✅ Target: Let price work toward the next support structure below.

And just like with the SLEC — price dropped sharply, delivering a clean, high-reward move while the risk was kept controlled and reasonable.

The Core Takeaway: A Strategy Built on Confluence

What makes both the SLEC and SHEC setups so effective isn’t just the candlestick pattern itself — it’s the confluence of factors working together:

Factor SLEC (Buy Setup) SHEC (Sell Setup)
Key Level Major Support Key Resistance
Oscillator Signal Oversold / Bullish Divergence Overbought / Bearish Divergence
Pattern Swing Low Engulfing Candle Swing High Engulfing Candle
Entry Open of next candle Open of next candle
Stop Loss Below the nearest swing low Above the nearest swing high

When all three elements line up — the key level, the oscillator signal, and the candlestick pattern — you’re not guessing. You’re trading with real, structural edge.

Final Thoughts

The SLEC and SHEC patterns aren’t magic. They won’t win every single trade. No pattern ever will. But when you apply them with discipline — waiting for the right support or resistance level, confirming with your oscillator, and only pulling the trigger when the candlestick pattern actually forms — you put yourself in a position to consistently take high-probability trades with a clearly defined and minimal risk.

That’s what separates traders who last from traders who don’t.

Be patient. Be disciplined. Let the setup come to you — and when it does, execute without hesitation.

Good luck out there.
